The hidden carbon footprint of your cleaning

When we think about reducing our carbon footprint, we think transport, heating, food. Rarely the cupboard under the sink. Yet every cleaning product we use carries a carbon footprint, discreet but very real, built up across its whole life cycle. To understand it, you have to follow a bottle from birth to end, using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method that ADEME applies to evaluate the environmental impact of products.

Stage 1: making the material and the container

It all starts with raw materials. Surfactants, often petrochemical in conventional formulas, take energy to synthesise. The plastic bottle is produced from resins derived from oil or gas, moulded under heat. The cap, the trigger and the label each add their share.

At this point most of a household product's footprint is already committed, before it has even left the factory. This is a counter-intuitive fact that LCA brings out systematically: for many products, the production phase weighs more than the use phase.

Stage 2: diluting, bottling, packaging

Then comes formulation. In a ready-to-use product, the active matter is diluted in a large quantity of water and then bottled. This step inflates the volume and the weight of the finished product, with direct consequences for the next stage.

Secondary packaging piles on: grouping cartons, pallet wrapping film, void fill. The bulkier the product because it has been diluted, the more packaging is needed to protect and group it.

Stage 3: transporting weight

The finished product, heavy with its water, takes to the road. From factory to warehouse, from warehouse to shop, then from shop to your home. Road freight is, as we have seen, the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in France according to CITEPA, at around 30 % of the national total. Every kilogram transported counts, and transporting water the consumer already has means emitting carbon for nothing.

Stage 4: use

Use itself has an impact, often underestimated: hot water. Rinsing, diluting and cleaning with hot water takes energy to heat that water. Depending on habits, this phase can account for a significant share of a product's total footprint, particularly for products used with a lot of hot water.

Stage 5: end of life

Finally, the empty bottle. Sorted, it enters a recycling channel whose performance varies by material. Unsorted or non-recyclable, it goes to incineration, which emits CO2, or to landfill. Every discarded bottle is an end of cycle that immediately calls for a new container to be made, and therefore a new cycle of emissions.

Where to act: the levers that count

LCA has one great merit: it ranks the levers instead of putting everything on the same footing. Three stand out for household products.

Concentrate. Removing the water from transport, by selling the active matter in concentrated form, attacks one of the heaviest items: the transport of needless volume and weight. A tablet of a few grams replaces a diluted bottle of several hundred.

Reuse the container. Keeping a durable bottle and buying only the refill avoids remanufacturing a container at every cycle, and therefore repeatedly incurring the production footprint which, as we saw, weighs heavily. A bio-based bottle, filled dozens of times, spreads its initial footprint over dozens of uses.

Restraint in the formula. A restrained composition, certified by a demanding standard such as Ecocert's Ecodetergent, limits high-footprint ingredients and problematic substances.

These three levers require no heroic gesture. They are built into the product itself. The consumer does not have to calculate: it is enough to choose a format that has already done the optimisation upstream.

What to remember

The carbon footprint of a cleaning product is decided long before it reaches your sink: in the material, the packaging, the dilution and the transport. Looking at it squarely, through life cycle assessment, reveals clear levers: concentrate so as to stop shipping water, reuse the container so as to stop remaking it, and choose restrained, certified formulas. Lightening your cleaning does not mean scrubbing less. It means scrubbing just as well, with a product that emitted far less to reach you.
