95 % water: the absurdity of shipping nothing

Take a bottle of ready-to-use multi-purpose cleaner from your cupboard. Turn it round and read the composition. Behind the learned names of surfactants and fragrances lies a reality the industry would rather not spell out: the main ingredient, by a wide margin, is water. For most ready-to-use household sprays it accounts for roughly 90 to 95 % of the contents. In other words, when you buy a spray you are above all paying for, transporting and storing water. The same water that already runs, drinkable, from your tap.
The observation sounds trivial. It is not. Multiplied by the billions of bottles sold every year, it describes one of the most discreet and most avoidable forms of waste in our daily consumption.
In a ready-to-use household spray, up to 95 % of the contents is water: the very water already running from your tap.
What your spray actually contains
A useful household cleaner takes very little matter: surfactants that lift soiling, sometimes a sequestering agent against limescale, a little fragrance, a preservative. Concentrated, that active matter weighs a few grams. All the rest, the overwhelming majority of the volume and the weight, is there only to dilute those few grams to the right working concentration.
Yet diluting is something anyone can do at home, in three seconds, with mains water. Having it done in a factory and then delivering the result means moving water from point A to point B when it is already available at point B. That is the heart of the absurdity.
Shipping water means burning carbon
Water is heavy: one litre weighs one kilogram. A lorry delivering pallets of ready-to-use sprays is therefore carrying, in the main, dead weight. That weight burns fuel, every kilometre, from the production site to the warehouse and from the warehouse to the shop.
Road freight is not neutral. In France, transport is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, responsible for around 30 % of national emissions according to the CITEPA inventory. Every tonne moved needlessly weighs on that balance. Moving water the consumer already has at home amounts to running lorries for nothing.
Packaging adds to this: the greater the volume to contain, because it has been diluted, the more bottle, cap, cardboard and storage space is needed. Diluting at the factory mechanically inflates the entire supply chain.
The calculation that changes everything
The logic of the effervescent tablet reverses the problem. Water is no longer sold; what is sold is the only thing that counts: the active matter, in solid, concentrated form. A tablet weighs a few grams. You drop it into your refillable bottle, add water from your tap, it dissolves, and you get exactly the same ready-to-use product.
The gain is twofold. First on transport: for equal effectiveness, grams travel instead of kilograms, which cuts the number of lorries, the fuel and the associated emissions accordingly. Then on packaging: the tablet fits in a light sachet, without the rigid plastic bottle that comes with every conventional refill. The bottle is yours to keep and reuse.
In this model water is no longer a product you buy. It goes back to being what it should always have remained: a local resource, already there, free but for the gesture.
What it changes for one household
A household gets through several bottles of cleaning products a year: multi-purpose, glass, bathroom, kitchen. Each of those bottles, in its conventional form, is a new plastic container produced, filled with water, transported, then discarded a few weeks later. Switching to tablet refills means keeping one durable bottle and buying back only the active matter, again and again.
The gesture is modest. Repeated by thousands of households, it takes lorries off the road and bottles out of the bin. That is precisely what ADEME calls sufficiency: not going without, but ceasing to consume what serves no purpose. Here, what serves no purpose is making water travel.
In short
Buying a conventional household spray means paying for and transporting, at 90 % or more, water you already own. The effervescent tablet removes that nonsense: it concentrates what is useful, lightens transport, reduces packaging and gives tap water back its role. Cleaning effectively has never required hauling rivers from one end of the country to the other.
